Digglett's Bluff
Overview
A small village in the Blackstone Freeholding region of eight families. The village's primary industry is considered iron mining, but in all practicality, is focused on animal care. The hill the town is built up against has several sedimentary layers of iron pyrite, but rather than dig for the materials themselves, the villagers leave that to the Digglett.
The Digglett is a massive reptilian creature with characteristics of a tortoise and a land drake, whose sole activity in life appears to be to slowly consume the hill behind town. It only retains silicate materials, so organics and metallics pass through, resulting in an aggregate that burns about as well as peat, containing partially processed iron nodules. About ten years ago a body mage of House Metamorphos passed through seeking new monsters to mimic with his arts, and explained the Digglett is a very juvenile earth dragon that will probably become more active in a couple centuries.
Digglett's Bluff is the only community in the Freeholding with all stone construction, and no security palisade. The watchtower is five stories tall, and has a clear view of the surrounding hilltops. There is a smithy built up against the bluff for melting iron down to ingots for shipment to Newhaven, a community garden patch to provide fresh vegetables, and a small goat herd.
Locations of Note
- Elf Retreat: a partially ruined structure dating back to when the Glamorous Elves ruled the area, built on top of the hill with what used to be a good view of the area. The village children claim it is haunted: it is also their favorite playground.
- Goatbanes: a marshy area behind the hills that feeds Jump Creek. The village goats seem to delight in getting lost in them.
