King's Landing
Overview
King's Landing is the major trade town in the County of Kingsfall, located where the Atsali River joins the Castella River, occupying both the north and south banks. The town is well fortified, prosperous, and guards a trade bridge to the western side of the Castella. A cynical observer might say it seems a little too prosperous, but the rest of Kingsfall does not seem to be suffering in comparison.
Population
King's Landing has a population between seven and eight thousand, with the usual mix of two-thirds human, and one third other races. Halvelings, Dwarves, and Keshanti are common, while Elves and Lizardfolk are exceedingly rare.
Economy
The economy of King's Landing is driven by trade: most of the goods leaving Kingsfall pass through the town, as does anything going up and down the Trade Road. Most of the farmland around the town is dedicated to non-grain vegetable crops and mid to small scale animal husbandry (pigs down through chickens). Beef, dairy, and grain are generally carted in.
Governance
Kingsfall is ruled by Baroness Leucrotta, who in turn owes fealty to Count Rhebus. She tries to not interfere in the commerce of the town: if you seem to be paying an appropriate level of taxes in proportion to your business activities, she's happy. The minor nobles and gentry of the town are largely linked to the major trade concerns.
Locations
- Amber Bottle: Li-Song Alina's favorite inn in King's Landing. Wolven owners, two streets away from the Mercenary's and Merchant's guilds, dedicated minstrel performance area, and on-staff Body & Craft mage capable of minor healing and cosmetic transformations.
- Brant Theater: Center of culture for the town, even if on the South Side. Currently performing “High King Regis I and the Naga Pirate Queen”.
- Casswal: Fishing village on the far side of the river from King's Landing. Technically owned by Barony Dorn, but in practice under the protection of Kingsfall.
- Grimspire: Largely intact watchtower dating back to the Degenerate Era, about a mile back from the riverbank in the forest: apparently the river used to be much closer back then. Once a favorite playground for local children, now considered haunted and/or cursed.
- Imperial Bureaucratic Campus: Six blocky buildings that used to house the Ministries of Trade, Interior, Taxation, Regulations & Measurements, Foreign Intelligence, and Imperial Post. Two of them are now barracks, two storehouses, one an armory, and the Spirit Animus in the Ministry of the Imperial Post refuses to allow any civilian below the rank of Viscount in.
- Leucroft Manor: Baronial seat for the town. The old keep on the site was razed about eight generations ago during a time of peace, and replaced with the current, more social-focused structure. The Baroness has concluded that transitioning the Imperial Bureaucratic Campus across the river to a more fortified state would be easier than retrofitting the manor.
- Westrin Bridge: Non-fortified trade bridge crossing the Castella River from the north side of town. More than wide enough for two sulokil drawn wagons to pass side-by-side.
NPCs of Note
- Baroness Leucrotta: Human ruler of King's Landing, early thirties. Leucrotta is a clever woman, who appears to have the goal of making her town once more attractive to the powers in Asteria.
- Beanpiper: human minstrel based out of the Amber Bottle. Strong bardic talent, and like Trixy, blessed by a minor fertility god. He can do many amazing and unlikely things with beans.
- Galt: Captain of the mercenary troop Salmon Banner, out of King's Landing. Cavalry unit, with three sabre users, three archer, and three occultists (mage, air-spirit tamer, priest of Extinction). Salmon banner has an “arrangement” with Isabelle, the princess-tower mimic.
- Isa: Elder of the Kingsfall Greater Raven flock. Servant of the Raven queen, married to Jellybean. A bit sarcastic, but friendly to the party.
- Jellybean: Impetuous junior member of the Kingsfall Greater Raven flock. Married to Isa, spent twenty years as a statue because he thought he could steal the forehead gem from a baby basiliskos serpent. He did intend to give it to Isa, honest.
